Routine Gynecological Services Every Woman Can Benefit From

Women often think of going to the gynecologist when they are experiencing issues with the reproductive organs, or when they are pregnant or trying to conceive. Indeed, these are good reasons to see a gynecologist. However, they are far from the only reasons to see a gynecologist. There are some routine gynecological services that almost every woman can benefit from.

PAP Smears

A PAP smear takes a sample of your cervical fluid and analyzes it for the presence of cells that would indicate cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. This test can be a little awkward and uncomfortable, but it is a very important test to have done at least every few years. Cervical cancer can be deadly, and it spreads quickly. The earlier it is caught, the better, and a PAP smear can often catch it before you develop any symptoms. All women should have regular PAP smears regardless of whether they are sexually active or not.

Breast Cancer Screening

You should be doing self-breast exams on a regular basis in order to detect any abnormal lumps or bumps in your breast tissue. However, it is easy for women to overlook small lumps. A gynecologist can do a more complete breast exam during your visit, making sure that any lumps or bumps do not go undetected. This exam is simple, only takes a few minutes, and can often be done through a medical gown, which makes it feel less invasive.

Contraception Counseling

You may or may not want to consider hormonal birth control options if you are sexually active. You may also want to look into non-hormonal options, such as a copper IUD. Even if you don't want to use birth control, it is a good idea to have a discussion about contraception with your gynecologist. They can let you know what your options may be if you change your mind, or if your level of sexual activity changes.

STI Testing and Counseling

Women who are not sexually active and those who only have one partner don't need to be as concerned about STDs, but it's still a good idea to talk about them with your gynecologist. Sometimes, STDs can go years without a diagnosis, and sometimes, women assume their partners are monogamous when they are not. A gynecologist can discretely guide you in this realm.

Gynecologists offer important services for women. If you're a woman, make an appointment with a gynecologist soon.

About Me

Learning About Birthing Options

Hi there, my name is Rebecca Ulman. Welcome to my website. I am here to talk to you about the birthing process from start to finish. I placed my trust in my OBGYN while pregnant with my first child. The doctor provided the knowledge and support I needed to complete a natural birth. Although I chose this option for myself, there are many other ways to approach the birthing process. I will use this site to talk about the different birthing options I had to choose from. I will talk about the various ways my OBGYN provided support throughout this process. Please come by often to learn more.
